The Hebrew masculine noun 'ed in Gen 2,6 remains a crux interpretum in spite of numerous efforts to explain it over a period of more than a century. The complexity surrounding the meaning of Hebrew 'ed is manifested in (1) the disputed etymological derivations, (2) the incomparable interpretations by means of ancient Near Eastern literatures, and (3) the contradictory renderings in ancient and modern translations. The ensuing debate calls for a renewed investigation of this term on the basis of etymological considerations, literary patterns, and comparative linguistics.
